There is no way to level up several levels, but you can try attacking the fire spirits on the bridge once you cross it if you're close to leveling up.

You can't rest, but you can get both HP and MP potions inside the tower. Have you liberated everyone?

Don't waste any spells on fire spirits (they are weak opponents anyway). Use "confuse" on the wizard and he will kill them off for you. He's sensitive to the "mud" spell, but if you're weak, it might be a good idea to let him kill all his minions and hurt himself repeatedly in his confusion before you finish him off with spells.
